26NOV2004-3JAN2005 I almost missed getting my baggage on the plane
from Hamburg to Frankfurt. A security man had to escort me to the gate
while I carried my bag with a pocket knife and a Swiss Army Tool. Because
of bad weather the connection in Frankfurt was close but after eleven hours (the
longest flight on my round the world trip), I arrived in Big D.
My father and his wife, Joy, met me at DFW. It was good to be
home. I was born in Dallas and lived in Dallas longer than any other
place. I declared a Tex-Mex food emergency and we stopped at El Fenix
Restaurant on the way to my father's house. Mmm, good.
Some people have a "to do" list. I have a "to eat"
list. Mexican food, Texas style barbecue, chicken fried steak, and other
southern delicacies were on my list. My dad and I hit every place on my
list and more.
The day after I arrived, we went to eat a delicious lunch at John and
Bernadette's house. John is my step-brother born only 11 days before me
and Bernadette is his wife from Ireland. We enjoyed fish that Joy had
caught on their recent trip to Alaska.
My dad has a thing about paper. So, while I was visiting I undertook a
great project. To organize his office the floor of which has been MIA
under paper for some years.
My sister, Gaynel, came down from Kansas City for a brief visit. She
stayed with her oldest friend, Belva. Belva is a consummate decorator and
her living room put North Park's Christmas decorations in the shade. We
all joined Belva and her husband Bill for a wonderful meal.
Gaynel and I traveled down memory lane and visited our old house on
Lansford and stopped by The West End for souvenirs and Sonny Bryan's
barbecue. It was a great day.
I spent lots of time catching up on family happenings with my dad and
Joy. We had a joint birthday party for John, Ben (my step brother Tom's
son), and me. Joy's chocolate pecan pie and lemon meringue pie were the
hits of the evening.
My father has one of those phone deals with free calls outside of Texas so I
got to spend lots of time talking to Diana, Heather and Brentley. Can't
wait to see them in January.
