The following ideas were based on what I thought I would need.  See Lessons Learned for what I figured out after traveling for four years.

I enjoy travel gadgets almost as much as traveling.  I plan to travel with no more than 50 pounds of stuff including computer, clothing...the works.  Check out my Equipment list.

Right now I plan to go west .  Check here for Route details as they develop.

Here is the overview of the route as I see it in January of 2001.  I'll start by air from Los Angeles or San Francisco.  I'll slowly approach Sydney with two or three stops in the Pacific.  New Zealand and Fiji are definite, and two other South Pacific stops up to 30 days are possible.

After arriving in Sydney, I'll spend a couple of months in Australia (Tasmania?, Great Barrier Reef, etc.), then I'll exit to Indonesia by air or sea.  I'll visit Bali and the great beaches in Malaysia and Southern Thailand.  I may spend an extended period in Thailand if I can work out a deal for CELTA (Certificate for English Language Teaching for Adults) in Bangkok and teach for a while.   By this point I'll have been on the road more than a year.

Then I plan to visit Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam.    Traveling mostly by boat, train, or local transport, I plan to enter China.  Zigzagging through Southwestern China, I plan to end up in Beijing where I can catch the Trans-Siberian Railroad during the autumn of my second year on the road.  A side trip from Moscow to St. Petersburg will be followed by a visit to Norway.

Then I plan to visit Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey.  I'll put my toe in Africa to see the Pyramids and then figure out a plan to meander through Western Europe.
